Grassington Hebden Circular Walk: A Wharfedale Riverside Loop

From Linton Falls to Hebden on the Grassington Hebden Circular Walk

There are some places I never get tired of walking in, and Grassington is definitely one of them. This is one of my favourite circular routes in the area. It’s not too long, not too difficult, and at around five miles in length, ideal at any time of year, especially in winter. This Grassington Hebden circular walk brings together riverside paths, peaceful countryside, and the charm of a lively market town and nearby village into one very enjoyable route.

The walk starts at the Grassington National Park Visitor Centre. From here, head along the main road past the southern end of the town and follow it as it bends left towards the bridge over the River Wharfe. Just before the bridge, turn left and join the Dales Way, which runs alongside the river.

Not far along, you’ll pass Grassington’s hydroelectric station, clearly visible on the opposite bank as it uses the flow of the Wharfe to generate renewable energy. This is one of the interesting early features of the Grassington Hebden circular walk. It stands out as a large brick building beside the river, and I always find the contrast between this working structure and the peaceful riverside setting surprisingly appealing.

Continue along the riverside path to the wonderful Linton Falls, which are impressive in any season. Although the route does not officially cross the bridge here, it’s hard to resist popping over briefly for alternative views before crossing back and continuing along the Dales Way towards Hebden. The path then runs through tranquil riverside fields, offering gentle views and a real sense of calm.

The path leads you to Hebden Suspension Bridge, another memorable landmark on the Grassington Hebden circular walk. Here, turn away from the river towards the minor road, then look for the footpath between the houses. This takes you through a shallow valley, past the trout farm, and gradually climbs out onto Mill Lane. It’s a lovely, quiet section that always feels pleasantly tucked away from the busier paths.

When you reach Mill Lane, it’s well worth calling in at the excellent Old School Tea Room for a coffee and cake. After that, continue to the main road in Hebden, turn left, and then take the footpath on the right, just after the pub.

The next section is a little different in character and can feel slightly more rugged and muddy at times, especially in winter, but it’s nothing to worry about. This part of the Grassington Hebden circular walk takes you through fields, woodland, and meadowland before joining High Lane. From here, it becomes a gentle, mainly descending track leading you back towards the upper end of Grassington.

Back in Grassington, it’s always worth taking some time to wander around this attractive little market town. It’s packed with character and is well known as one of the filming locations for All Creatures Great and Small. For me, it’s the perfect place to finish this Grassington Hebden circular walk and reflect on a thoroughly enjoyable day out in Wharfedale.

This Grassington Hebden circular walk offers a rewarding mix of scenery, quiet paths, and welcoming villages, making it a route I’m always happy to return to. If you’re looking for a similar walk with a little more distance and variety, you may also enjoy my longer Grassington walk, which takes in many of the same highlights alongside additional moorland scenery.
