Alfred Wainwright’s Love Affair with the Lakeland Fells

Alfred Wainwright, born into a relatively impoverished family in Blackburn, Lancashire, was an academically gifted student who left school at the age of 13. Instead of joining his classmates in finding work in local mills, Wainwright started his career as an office boy in the Blackburn Borough Engineer’s Department. Through night school, he gained qualifications in accountancy that elevated his career within the Blackburn Borough Council. From a young age, Wainwright exhibited a passion for long walks and a fascination with drawing and cartography.

At the age of 23, Wainwright embarked on a week-long walking holiday in the Lake District with his cousin. This trip, which included a climb up Orrest Head and offered the first glimpse of the Lakeland fells, sparked a lifelong devotion to the region. In 1931, he married Ruth Holden, a mill worker, and together, they had a son, Peter. A decade later, Wainwright relocated to Kendal, Westmorland, nearer to the fells, despite having to accept a lower-paying job at the Borough Treasurer’s office. He served in this role from 1948 until his retirement in 1967. His first marriage ended in divorce shortly before his retirement, and in 1970, he wed Betty McNally, a divorcee, who became his walking companion.

Wainwright was a lifelong supporter of Blackburn Rovers football club and held no religious affiliations, identifying himself as an agnostic. Known for his introverted nature, he often avoided conversation, even with fellow walkers. Wainwright passed away in 1991 from a heart attack. In his will, he bequeathed all his possessions, including his house and royalty income, to his second wife Betty, leaving nothing for his son Peter.

Wainwright’s Thirteen Year Journey to Document the Fells

On November 9, 1952, Alfred Wainwright started drafting his comprehensive guide to the fells of the Lake District. Over the following 13 years, he meticulously crafted the seven-volume series at an average rate of one page per evening, having precisely planned the detailed content beforehand.

In the context of the Lake District, a ‘Wainwright’ refers to any one of the 214 hills or mountains featured in Alfred Wainwright’s ‘A Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells’. Many walkers undertake the personal challenge of ‘bagging’ all 214 Wainwrights, a feat considered a significant accomplishment within the British hillwalking community.

Book One: The Eastern Fells (35 fells)

Wainwright’s journey started with the Eastern Fells, the first volume in his series of pictorial guides, published in May 1955. A tribute to “THE MEN OF THE ORDNANCE SURVEY whose maps of Lakeland…” grace its pages, this guide took two years to create. It covers 35 distinct Eastern Fells, encompassed by the River Glenderamackin and Dacre Beck in the north, Ullswater, Goldrill Beck and Kirkstone Pass in the east, Stock Ghyll and the River Rothay to the south, and Dunmail Raise, Thirlmere, and St John’s Beck to the west.

BOOK ONE is dedicated to THE MEN OF THE ORDNANCE SURVEY whose maps of Lakeland have given me much pleasure both on the fells and by my fireside.

Book Two: The Far Eastern Fells (36 fells)

The second volume in Wainwright’s series, The Far Eastern Fells, was published in May 1957. He started work on this book even before the Eastern Fells made their debut. This book, a homage to “The memory of THE MEN WHO BUILT THE STONE WALLS, which have endured the storms of centuries and remain to this day as monuments to enterprise, perseverance and hard work”, comprises 36 Far Eastern Fells. The boundaries encapsulating these fells are Ullswater and Pooley Bridge to the north, the River Lowther, Swindale Beck, and Little Mosedale Beck to the east, Long Sleddale, Kentmere, Troutbeck and Ambleside to the south, and Stock Ghyll, Kirkstone Pass and Goldrill Beck to the west.

Book Three: The Central Fells (27 fells)

The Central Fells, Wainwright’s third volume, was published in May 1958. This book, dedicated to “Those eager explorers of the fells THE DOGS OF LAKELAND willing workers and faithful friends, and an essential part of Lakeland life”, includes 27 Central Fells. These are bordered by Keswick to the north, St John’s Vale, Thirlmere, Dunmail Raise, Grasmere, Rydal Water, and the River Rothay to the east, the River Brathay and Great Langdale to the south, and Stake Pass, Langstrath, Borrowdale, and Derwent Water to the west.

Wainwright’s fourth book, The Southern Fells, was published in April 1960, paying homage to “The hardiest of all fellwalkers THE SHEEP OF LAKELAND the truest lovers of the mountains, their natural homes and providers of their food and shelter”. These 30 Southern Fells are enclosed by Borrowdale and Langstrath to the north, Stake Pass, Great Langdale and Yewdale to the east, Walna Scar Pass and Birker Fell to the south, and Irton Fell, Wast Water, Wasdale and Sty Head to the west.

The Northern Fells, the fifth volume, was published in April 1962, dedicated to “Those who travel alone THE SOLITARY WANDERERS ON THE FELLS who find contentment in the companionship of the mountains and of the creatures of the mountains”. Home to 24 fells, this region is popular due to Keswick, a favoured holiday destination. The boundaries of these fells are Caldbeck to the north, the River Caldew and Mosedale to the east, the River Glenderamackin and the River Greta to the south, and the River Derwent and Bassenthwaite Lake to the west.

Book Seven: The Western Fells (33 fells)

In the seventh and final volume of the series, The Western Fells, published in April 1966, Wainwright simply dedicated the work to “ALL WHO HAVE HELPED ME”. Wrapping up his 13-year odyssey in December 1965, Wainwright showcased an incredible accomplishment of mapping the entire Lake District whilst maintaining his role in a key civic post in Kendal. This final collection includes 33 fells bounded by Crummock Water, Buttermere and Sty Head to the north-east, Wast Water to the south, and Ennerdale Water to the west. This monumental effort stands as a testament to Wainwright’s dedication, passion and love for the Lake District fells.

BOOK SEVEN is dedicated to ALL WHO HAVE HELPED sometimes with advice, sometimes with information, sometimes with no more than a friendly nod or smile. They are too many to be named, and indeed some are unknown, anonymous fellow-walkers who pass the time of day and are gone. I must, however, thank my wife, for not standing in my way, and a few special friends who would not ask for identification here, for making the way easier for me to travel. It has been a long and lonely way, but I have trodden it increasingly aware of the goodwill and encouragement of many kind people, most of whom I shall never meet. And now, after thirteen years, I have come to the end of it and my final task, a difficult one, is to find words adequate to express my appreciation to everybody who has helped. The least I can do, and the most I can do, is to acknowledge my debt by this dedication.
