Information about All 214 Wainwright Fells with the Wainwrights Map
The fells of England’s Lake District have an almost mythical quality. Their rugged slopes and sweeping views have inspired poets, artists, and wanderers for centuries. Yet one man, more than any other, captured their spirit on paper. Alfred Wainwright, a meticulous accountant from an industrial Lancashire town, painstakingly drew, mapped, and described 214 of these peaks in a series of guides that became far more than simple route instructions. His seven volumes are not just books; they are a love letter to a landscape that changed his life.
This guide explores the man behind the work, from his humble beginnings to his lasting legacy, and provides a comprehensive overview of his masterpiece. This is the ultimate Wainwrights map for any fellwalker.

From Mill Town to Mountain View: The Early Life Behind the Wainwrights Map
Alfred Wainwright’s appreciation for the fells was shaped by the world he was born into, a world that could hardly have been more different. His formative years in industrial Blackburn were marked by a stark contrast between the soot-stained streets of his youth and the natural grandeur he would later embrace. This background of urban hardship and studious self-improvement helped forge the perspective of a man who saw the Lakeland fells not just as beautiful, but as a revelation of truth and freedom.
Born on 17 January 1907, his childhood was one of relative poverty. His father, a stonemason, struggled with alcoholism, leaving his mother to take in washing to make ends meet. These hardships instilled in Wainwright a quiet determination. A gifted student, he excelled in nearly every subject and, on leaving school at 13, sidestepped the fate of many of his peers in the local cotton mills by securing a position as an office boy in the Blackburn Borough Engineer’s Department. Driven by ambition, he dedicated his evenings to night school, eventually qualifying as an accountant and advancing his career at the council.
This disciplined path ran alongside a private passion for writing, drawing, and cartography. He became obsessed with creating his own meticulously detailed maps, developing the skills that would later underpin the Wainwrights map and give it its distinctive character.
This early life, defined by steady work and an imaginative escape into the world of maps, laid the groundwork for the man whose destiny was about to be altered by a single view.
A Life Transformed: Orrest Head and the Birth of the Wainwrights Map Vision
Wainwright’s first visit to the Lake District in 1930 wasn’t merely a holiday. It was a life-changing experience that set the course for his future work. At the age of 23, he travelled with his cousin, Eric Beardsall, from Blackburn to Windermere. There, they climbed Orrest Head, a modest hill whose summit brought an epiphany. From the top, a panoramic view of mountains and lakes unfolded before him, striking him with the force of a spiritual awakening.
That moment ignited what Wainwright would later call a lifelong “love affair” with the Lakeland fells. It also strengthened his desire to live among them, a dream he realised in 1941 when he moved to Kendal to work in the Borough Treasurer’s office. He later became Borough Treasurer in 1948.
His personal life also found stability in Lakeland. After his first marriage to Ruth Holden, with whom he had a son, Peter, ended, he later found happiness with his second wife, Betty McNally, who became his regular walking companion.
Now living in the heart of the landscape that had inspired him, Wainwright was perfectly placed to begin the work that would eventually become the Wainwrights map.

A Love Letter in Seven Volumes: Creating the Wainwrights Map
The Pictorial Guides to the Lakeland Fells are unlike any other guidebooks. They aren’t simply functional manuals, but carefully hand-crafted works, born from one man’s deep connection to the landscape. Each page reproduces Wainwright’s handwriting and pen-and-ink drawings, with no typeset material at all.
This approach gives the books an intimacy and personality that continues to appeal to walkers today. Rather than relying on conventional cartography, Wainwright created a personal and highly detailed Wainwrights map that reflected his own experience of the fells.
The project began on 9 November 1952, marking the start of a thirteen-year undertaking carried out in quiet evening sessions. He worked with methodical dedication, completing an average of one page per night. He later described the books as his “love letter” to the fells and was awarded an MBE for his work.
Remarkably, this effort was originally intended as a private record, with no plan for publication. The finished result became a seven-volume masterpiece that defined how generations of walkers would use and understand the Wainwrights map.
A Walker’s Guide to the Wainwrights Map: The Seven Books
The seven volumes of the Pictorial Guides collectively form the Wainwrights map, covering 214 fells that have become a famous peak-bagging challenge. The hills are now widely known as “the Wainwrights”.
Each book focuses on a specific region of the Lake District and, together, they create a complete and systematic Wainwrights map of the entire area.

The Man Behind the Wainwrights Map
Alfred Wainwright presented a striking contrast between public perception and private reality. He was often portrayed as reclusive, yet his writing reveals sensitivity and warmth. His wife, Betty, described him as a shy man who hid behind a gruff exterior.
He preferred the companionship of mountains to social obligations, finding peace and honesty in the landscape he mapped so carefully. This outlook shaped both his walking and the character of the Wainwrights map.
His compassion extended beyond the fells. He donated most of his book royalties to animal charities and supported Animal Rescue Cumbria, helping to fund a shelter. This generosity reflected the values that also informed his careful stewardship of the landscape.
An Everlasting Legacy: The Wainwrights Map in Modern Walking
Alfred Wainwright’s influence on British walking culture is immense. His guides reshaped how people explore the Lake District and continue to guide walkers today.
His key legacies include:
The Wainwrights
The 214 fells remain a major challenge for hillwalkers, with many using the Wainwrights map as their primary reference.
The Coast to Coast Walk
Wainwright devised the long-distance route from St Bees to Robin Hood’s Bay, usually described as about 190 miles. It remains one of Britain’s most popular trails.
Continued Inspiration
With over two million copies sold, the Pictorial Guides have stayed in print for decades. For many walkers, they remain the most trusted and personal form of Wainwrights map available.
Final Reflections on the Wainwrights Map and Its Creator
In the end, Wainwright’s connection to the fells was complete. His final wish was to have his ashes scattered on Haystacks, beside Innominate Tarn. After his death on 20 January 1991, his wife Betty fulfilled this request.
The final page of The Western Fells contains a passage that reflects his philosophy and remains deeply meaningful to walkers who follow his routes and consult the Wainwrights map:
‘The fleeting hour of life of those who love the hills is quickly spent, but the hills are eternal. Always there will be the lonely ridge, the dancing beck, the silent forest; always there will be the exhilaration of the summits. These are for the seeking, and those who seek and find while there is yet time will be blessed both in mind and body.’
